Apicoectomy

Apicoectomy is a surgical procedure to remove residual infection from the root tips of teeth that have received root canal treatment.  When this procedure is indicated, it is usually because re-treatment of the root canal system of the infected tooth is not feasible or desirable.  The purpose of the procedure is to remove infection from the tooth root and bone around the tooth in order to prolong the useful life of the tooth.

This procedure consists of gaining access to the tooth roots via incisions in the gum tissue and bone overlying the tooth.  It is carried out in the office setting under local anesthesia or IV sedation.

Healing from this procedure requires a few days.  When successful, the tooth becomes asymptomatic and will function indefinitely. A small percentage of these procedures are ultimately unsuccessful, resulting in the loss of the tooth.
